Hey Uncle D, Dan Filippone

This is how I’ll always remember you, taking enjoyment in one of your hobbies, camera in hand (see pictures),full of energy and passion with a giant smile across your face. You are my uncle, you are my Godfather but most importantly you are my friend. You’ve given me a lifetime of memories that I will never forget. You had the patience to teach me how to drive and introduced me to bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I’ll never forget the nights on Frankfort St. when we would sit on the back porch and talk for hours on end. We would talk about life and family and just the most random things possible. You were comforting and easy to talk to. That was my favorite part about our relationship.

You were a man of many passions. You loved vintage cars, drawing, and photography. You obsessed over all kinds of music (especially disco) and have the biggest collection of vinyl records that I have ever seen! You have a beautiful smile and an infectious laugh. You have a child like wonder and excitement. You’re an incredible dancer. I still remember seeing you dancing with Elvira and me having this immense feeling of fear! Her standards of what a man should dance like have forever been raised. No one could control a dance floor like you. You took pride in your work especially when you were working at the hospital. You always had a big heart and wanted to help those in need. No one can ever repay you for what you did for Nana and Papa. When Papa got sick you moved back in with your parents and were the care taker for both of them while they were sick. You took them to their appointments, helped around the house, and were their support system in their greatest times of need. Your parents adored you, but I don’t need to tell you something you already know.

You enjoyed cooking, appreciated scenery, and were always one to take in a beautiful sunset. If there was ever a massive thunderstorm you could guarantee Uncle D would be sitting under the deck with a front row view of the downpour of rain, blasts of lightning, and roars of thunder. You always lived in the moment, something we all should learn from you.

It took a lot of courage to come out as a gay man. Back then the world was not supportive of the gay lifestyle like it is now. You were true to yourself and your feelings. You had no shame and were extremely proud to be gay. You taught me a major lesson. Never be afraid or ashamed of who you are. You can always be yourself. I will always be proud of you for that.

I’ve never seen you happier then you met the one, Paul. For over 20 years you have been each other’s better half. I always loved seeing you two together. I’ve never seen you adore someone as much as you did Paul. Whenever I asked about your relationship it was always positive you always spoke highly of your significant other. Your love story could be written as a movie. When I spoke to you last you said Paul was your angel. You were so proud to tell me that Paul asked you to marry him. You were quick to show off your engagement ring and said you did not want to pass away unmarried. Your last wish was fulfilled.

You were the cool Uncle. The young uncle that was still immature at times and able to relate to all the kids. Your nieces and nephews ADORE you. Whether it was playing video games, making fart noises when our grandparents would bend over, or trying to scare us all by taking over the Ouija board, you always had us entertained.

Even when you were diagnosed with cancer last year you still stayed positive and fought through each treatment and surgery as strong as possible. You were only 47 and didn’t deserve to pass so young. As we mourn you I can’t help but to celebrate your life as well. I am forever grateful to have had you in my life. Yes we will miss you every day, but I would like to think that there was some greater reason for you leaving so soon. I would like to think my Dad and Nana and Papa were waiting for you right as you left us. Only the good die young, and you were one of the best!

You will never be forgotten. Your spirit will live on through your Husband Paul Zilla, your 4 sisters (Dana DelPrato Veronica Filippone Shaponick Virginia Filippone, Teri Sullivan)your 9 nieces and nephews, and your boatload of friends. No one truly ever dies. It is time for your body to rest in peace but your soul and memories you have given us all will live on. Whenever there is a massive rainstorm or when I hear ABBA’s Dancing Queen (among other disco songs), it will always set off a reminder in my mind, put a big smile on my face and remind me of you. This is not a good bye Uncle D but a see you later.

Love,
Mark

May this seedling continue to flourish many years and grow tall and strong and endure all the harsh moments life can bring, just as you did. You were strong and relentless in your battle, but God called you home. May you rest in peace as you join your parents. We will miss you, we will always love you and remember all the wonderful moments we were blessed by being a part of your world.

I was the lucky one to have met Danny in this lifetime. From the moment we met he touched my heart. Danny was such a delightful character. He had such a great sense of humor. He was a true friend. I loved Danny so much. My heartfelt sympathy to his family and his one great love Paul. Danny's dancing in Heaven. You never lose the ones you love, when you love the ones you lose.
